Nigerian users of social media app, Twitter, are reacted and expressed divergent views after the company’s announcement on Monday, that it will set up its first Africa base in Africa, Ghana precisely.
Before this development, there was a never-ending rivalry between the two countries, known colloquially as the ‘jollof wars.’
The announcement of Twitter to set up its Africa base has triggered reactions around the existing rivalry, which has resulted into a debate among Nigerian users of the social media app.
While the debate was on, comments were made that Nigeria’s rapid growth and investment in its tech scene ought to have made Twitter pitch its tent in the country, rather than Twitter’s decision is a snub to the continent’s largest economy.
In a nutshell, Twitter’s decision has come as a surprise to Nigerians.
To justify the claims Nigerians are making, that Nigeria is a better destination for such investment, instead of Nigeria’s neighbouring West African country; it has been recorded by NOI polls that 39.6 million Nigerians have a Twitter account, which is more than the entire 32 million population of Ghana.
Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey pledged to move to the continent for several months in 2020 after a tour of Africa in 2019.
Now it seems that his business will make that move first.
In the midst of the reactions, Dorsey has made a comment which was contained in a statement, announcing the decision.
Some of the reasons for Dorsey’s decision were: Twitter described Ghana “as a champion for democracy, a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet.”
Meanwhile, Ghana’s hosting of the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) was cited by the social media giant as another reason for moving there.
Twitter also acknowledged that it aligns with “its ambition to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.”
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo who has been expressing his happiness concerning Twitter’s plan in his country said, “The choice of Ghana as headquarters for Twitter’s Africa operations is EXCELLENT news,” and described it as a “beautiful partnership between Ghana and Twitter and which is critical for the dev’t of Ghana’s hugely important tech sector.”
