According to a Wednesday filing in Manhattan federal court, TikTok rival Triller Inc has agreed to pay Sony Music Entertainment (6758.T) more than $4.5 million to settle charges that Triller violated an agreement governing the use of musicians’ songs on the site.
The label also stated that a portion of the lawsuit it filed against Triller for allegedly violating its copyrights would go forward.
On Thursday, a representative for Sony Music declined to comment. An inquiry for comments was not immediately answered by Triller’s representatives.
Last August, Sony Music filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles-based Triller, alleging that the latter had failed to fulfill its obligations under a 2016 content-distribution contract since previous March.
In the case, Triller Inc. was accused of misusing dozens of songs by Sony Music artists like Britney Spears, Harry Styles, and Janis Joplin.
When asked at the time about the removal of Sony Music’s collection from the site, a representative for Triller stated that Sony’s complaint had “grossly mischaracterized” their relationship.
