MTN launches first 5G network in Uganda

Uganda sees the launch of MTN’s first 5G network

The first 5G network in east Africa was inaugurated on Friday by the telecom company MTN Uganda, a branch of the MTN Group of South Africa.

With almost 15 million subscribers, MTN has Uganda’s largest customer base. It mostly rivals a regional branch of Bharti Airtel.

Lower latency and faster transmission rates are features of 5G.

MTN Uganda’s CEO Sylvia Mulinge stated that the company aimed to carry out complete 5G coverage in the capital city of Kampala by the end of 2024 and that over the following two years all of its base sites in significant cities would also be upgraded to 5G.
